The enemy attacked me when I did not expect it, but YOU LORD, upheld me. ~ Psalm 18:18
When Philip got to the office, I told him everything I could remember of what the doctor had said. At this point we were both realizing our life was about to change – but to what extent we did not know…we both imagined the worst. We cried together and tried to reassure each other that everything was going to be fine. At one point I didn’t know what was worse – the empty, lost, sick feeling in my gut – or the look of despair, worry and fear on my husband’s face. This whole nightmare hit me out of nowhere. How did this happen…why did this happen? Of all the things that could happen in our life, cancer was not something I ever expected. My head was drowning in question after question. We have been together since high school – was this it? Was this how our life together was going to end? Was I going to leave this earth…my husband, my kids and grandchildren? I was lost in a raging sea of uncertainty and terror.
Mightier than the violent raging of the seas, mightier than the breakers on the shore – the LORD above is mightier than these. ~ Psalm 93:4
With my office walls closing in on us, Phil suggested we get out of the office. We own a construction company so there is always a jobsite to check on or materials to pick up. As we rode from one jobsite to the next, I began receiving phone calls from what I learned would be my “team of doctors”. I was set up for a “pre-op MRI” and a visit to the Surgeon who would perform what is called a “Lumpectomy” to remove the lump in my left breast. The lump that the doctors called “small” even “tiny”, was massive & horrifying to me…and yes, it was life threatening.
As we rode around, sometimes in silence…lost in our own thoughts and sometimes reassuring each other, Phil told me I should give his cousin a call, Dr. S, who just happens to be an Oncologist and lives in a city not too far from us. He told me he knew his cousin would talk straight with us and also follow my treatment plan and help me along…like a second opinion…someone we trust to oversee my treatment and all that was about to happen to me…to us. At that moment I realized, GOD was already revealing to me that HE has put someone in my path…someone I can trust and feel comfortable talking to. I mean really, how many people do you know who has been diagnosed with cancer and has an Oncologist in the family? Oh, I’m sure they exist…of course they do, I just didn’t know any of “those people”…until now. I can tell you though, I was so very grateful.
That evening we put on our brave faces and visited our kids, filling them in on as much information as we could remember and of course, reassure them that everything was going to be fine. And – like their parents, they put their brave faces on and agreed…everything would be fine.
When we returned home, we called Dr. S and told him everything we could remember about the mammogram results and my diagnosis. He told me that Ductal Carcinoma was the most common type of breast cancer and that the Surgeon would most likely be doing a Lumpectomy with Sentra Node, which is the removal of the lymph node closest to the tumor. He told me that the most common type is Estrogen Positive and that after the surgery I would be put on a pill that I would take daily, but the best part is…no chemotherapy – only radiation. At this point, this is what we all thought…little did I know I would receive two more phone calls from the mammogram doctor – Dr. O – with more frightening news.
My appointment with the Surgeon, Dr. H, was scheduled for June 14th…exactly one year to the date of my mother’s passing. As I waited for the date of my appointment with the Surgeon to arrive, I sat down with my Bible and found a passage in the Book of Romans and wrote out a Scripture Prayer:
Father, YOUR Word says that I should not be like a cowering, fearful slave (Romans 8:15) and as I wait, I must wait confidently (Romans 8:25). And Father, YOU tell me the Holy Spirit helps me in my distress. At times like this, I do not know how to pray, or what I should pray for. But Praise YOU Father GOD, YOUR Word says the Holy Spirit prays for me with groanings that cannot be expressed in words (Romans 8:26). And YOU Father GOD, who knows all hearts know what the Spirt is saying because the Spirit pleads for me in harmony with YOUR own will (Romans 8:27). Therefore, I know that YOU, Father will cause everything to work together for my good, because I love YOU LORD, and I am called according to YOUR purpose for me (Romans 8:28). Despite all the things I have been through these past days and weeks, I know that overwhelming Victory is mine through Christ who loves me (Romans 8:37).
Then I declared:
“Behold, YOU are the LORD, the GOD of all flesh. There is nothing too difficult for YOU!” (Jeremiah 32:27)
Once I wrote that prayer, I felt more at peace. I decided to sit down with my Bible and write down every Scripture on Healing and the Promises of GOD I could find. The Word of GOD is so very powerful in our lives when we truly and earnestly seek HIM. As I read through the many Scriptures our Gracious Heavenly Father has given us on healing and HIS Promises, I began to feel empowered, more confident, strong and fully trusting in the only option I had – my LORD.
Now, did I have days ahead of fear and doubt – Oh Yes I did! But, each time I did I would take out my power charging Scriptures and read them until I felt the calm, confident Peace of the LORD come over me. I am listing them all here – I pray they help you in your time of distress, fear, doubt and need. Little did I know, I was about to need them… (to be continued…)
