“The LORD is my light and my salvation – so why should I be afraid? The LORD protects me from danger – so why should I tremble?” ~ Psalm 27:1
Fear is a dark shadow that envelops us and ultimately imprisons us within ourselves. Each of us has been a prisoner of fear at one time or another – fear of rejection, misunderstanding, uncertainty, sickness, or even death. But, we can conquer fear by using the bright liberating light of the Lord, who brings salvation. If we want to dispel the darkness of fear, let us remember what David said: “the LORD is my light and my salvation”.
2 “When evil people come to destroy me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. 3 Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will know no fear. Even if they attack me, I remain confident. 4 The one thing I ask of the LORD – the thing I seek most – is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in HIS Temple.” 27:2-4 – When David says the “house of the LORD” and “HIS Temple”, he could be referring to the Tabernacle in Gibeon, to the sanctuary he had put up to house the Ark of the Covenant, or to the Temple that his son Solomon was to build. David most likely had the Temple in mind because he made many of the plans for it. – “David said, ‘My son Solomon is still young and inexperienced, and the Temple of the LORD must be a magnificent structure, famous and glorious throughout the world. So I will begin making preparations for it now’. So David collected vast amounts of building materials before his death.” – 1 Chronicles 22:5 – However, David may have also used the word Temple to mean “the presence of the LORD”. His greatest desire was to live in GOD’s presence each day of his life. Sadly, this is not the greatest desire of many who claim to be believers. But those who desire to live in GOD’s presence each day will be able to enjoy that relationship forever.
5 “For HE will conceal me there when troubles come; HE will hide me in HIS sanctuary. HE will place me out of reach on a high rock. 6 Then I will hold my head high, above my enemies who surround me. At HIS Tabernacle I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the LORD with music.” – 27:5-6
LORD, YOU are our light and our salvation, we are not afraid. YOU protect us from danger, we will not tremble. When evil people come to destroy us, when our enemies and foes attack us, they will stumble and fall. Though a mighty army surrounds us, our hearts will know no fear. Even if they attack us, we will remain confident. The one thing we ask of YOU, LORD – the thing we seek most – is to live in YOUR house all the days of our lives, delighting in YOUR perfections and meditating in YOUR Temple. For we know YOU will conceal us there when troubles come. YOU will hide us in YOUR sanctuary. YOU will place us out of reach on a high rock. Then, Father GOD, we will hold our heads high, above our enemies who surround us. At YOUR Tabernacle we will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising YOU with music.
