“The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to HIM.” ~ Psalm 24:1
Because “the earth is the LORD’s”, all of us are stewards or caretakers. We should be committed to the proper management of this world and its resources, but we are not to become devoted to anything created or act as sole proprietors because this world will pass away. “And this world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of GOD, you will live forever.” – 1 John 2:17 – When our attachment to possessions is strong, it is hard to believe that what we want will one day pass away. It may be even harder to believe that the person who does the will of GOD will live forever. But this was John’s conviction based on the facts of Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and promises. Knowing that this evil world and our desires for its pleasures will end can give us courage to control our greedy, self-indulgent behavior and to continue doing GOD’s will.
It is believed that this Psalm was written to celebrate the moving of the Ark of the Covenant from Obed-edom’s house to Jerusalem. – 10 “So David decided not to move the Ark of the LORD into the City of David. He took it instead to the house of Obed-edom of Gath. 11 The Ark of the Lord remained there with the family of Obed-edom for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household. 12 Then King David was told, ‘The LORD has blessed Obed-edom’s home and everything he has because to the Ark of GOD’. So David went there and brought the Ark to the City of David with a great celebration.” – 2 Samuel 6:10-12 – The tradition was that this Psalm would be sung on the first day of each week in the Temple services. Verses 1-6 tells us who is worthy to join in such a celebration of worship.
2 “For HE laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths. 3 Who may climb the mountain of the LORD? Who may stand in HIS holy place? 4 Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies. 5 They will receive the LORD’s blessing and have right standing with their Savior. 6 They alone may enter GOD’s presence and worship the GOD of Israel.” – Psalm 24:2-6
Father, we know this world will fade away along with everything in it, but those of us who do YOUR will, will live forever. Only those of us whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and tell lies, will receive YOUR blessing and have right standing with our Savior. Thank YOU, Father GOD for the promise of entering YOUR presence and the privilege of worshiping YOU – forever.
