7 “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The commandments of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are clear, giving insight to life. 9 Reverence for the LORD is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the LORD are true, each one is fair. 10 They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. 11 They are a warning to those who hear them; there is great reward for those who obey them.” ~ Psalm 19:7-11
When we think of the law, we often think of something that keeps us from having fun. But here we see the opposite: GOD’s laws revives us, makes us wise, brings joy to the heart, gives insight, warns us, and rewards us. GOD’s laws are guidelines and lights for our path, rather than chains on our hands and feet. They point at danger to warn us then point at success to guide us.
12 “How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. 13 Keep me from deliberate sins! Do not let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.” – Psalm 19:12-13 – Many Christians are plagued by guilt. They worry that they may have committed a sin unknowingly; done something good with selfish intentions, failed to put their whole heart into a task, or neglected what they should have done. Guilt can play an important role in bringing us to Christ and in keeping us behaving properly. But – it should not cripple us or make us fearful. GOD fully and completely forgives us – even for those sins we do unknowingly.
14 “May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to YOU, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.” – Psalm 19:14 – Would we change the way we live if we knew that every word, thought and action would be examined by GOD first? David asked that GOD would approve his words and thoughts as though they were offerings brought to the alter. As we begin each new day, let us determine that GOD’s love will guide what we say and how we will think and act.
LORD, YOUR law is perfect and reviving to our soul. YOUR decrees are trustworthy, making us wise. YOUR commandments are right, bringing joy to our hearts. YOUR commands are clear, giving insight to our life. We pray our reverence for YOU is pure and will last forever. YOUR laws are true, each one is fair. Make YOUR laws more desirable to us than gold, even the finest gold. YOUR laws are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. They are a warning to those of us who hear them, and a great reward for those of us who obey them. YOUR laws are a guideline and a light for our path.
Cleanse us from hidden faults, LORD and keep us from deliberate sin. Do not let them control us – then we will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin. May the words of our mouths and the thoughts of our heart be pleasing to YOU, LORD, our rock and our Redeemer. Let us remember that our decisions become actions; our actions become habits; our habits become character; and our character becomes our destiny. Therefore, the decisions, actions, habits, and character formed here on earth will fix our eternal destinies.
